Elon Musk’s xAI and X Sue Apple and OpenAI Over Alleged Monopolistic Practices
Elon Musk's artificial intelligence startup, xAI, and his social media platform, X, have filed a lawsuit against Apple and OpenAI in Texas federal court. The complaint alleges that the partnership between Apple and OpenAI to integrate OpenAI's chatbot into Apple's operating systems violates antitrust laws, framing it as a collusion between two monopolists.
The lawsuit claims OpenAI controls 80% of the AI-powered chatbot market, while Apple holds a 65% share in smartphones. Musk's companies accuse both firms of unfair competition and violations of the Sherman Act, including monopolization and conspiracy to monopolize their respective markets. Apple has yet to respond, while OpenAI dismissed the filing as part of Musk's "ongoing pattern of harassment."
The legal battle follows Apple's announcement at its Worldwide Developers Conference in June, which signaled deeper integration of OpenAI's technology into its ecosystem. The case could have far-reaching implications for competition in both the AI and smartphone industries.
